A mobile-first wellness application designed to help users build healthy daily habits.
Overview
Mindful is a wellness app that helps users build sustainable daily habits through gentle reminders, progress visualization, and guided routines. The challenge was creating an experience that motivates without overwhelming.
The Problem
Existing wellness apps suffered from two extremes: either too simplistic (basic habit checkboxes) or too complex (overwhelming dashboards and metrics). Users wanted something that felt supportive, not demanding.
Research
I conducted 15 user interviews and analyzed usage patterns from three competing apps. Key findings:
- Users abandoned apps that required more than 30 seconds of daily input
- Visual progress (streaks, charts) was the top motivator for retention
- Push notification fatigue was the #1 reason for uninstalls
Design Approach
The interface centers on a single daily view — what's ahead today, what's done, and a gentle nudge for what's next. No dashboards, no deep menus on the home screen.
Key decisions
- One-tap logging — mark a habit complete in a single tap from the home screen
- Adaptive reminders — notification timing adjusts based on when users actually complete habits
- Progress rings — circular visualizations that fill over the week, more motivating than streaks that break
Results
After a 6-week beta with 200 users:
- 72% daily active retention (vs. 35% industry average)
- Average session time: 22 seconds
- NPS score: 68
